First and foremost you need to moisturize your face. If you don't then your skin will be dried out and the foundation will not apply as easily plus your foundation will accentuate the dry spots. Next face primer, if you need help as to what to use or don't know about primers yet check here for some guidance. Also apply some lip balm as well to prep your lips for lipstick/gloss.
Start with liquid foundation, I'm using L'orel's True Match Super Blendable Makeup in Porcelain W1. Pour a little on your hand and using a foundation brush apply all over your face in criss cross motion. If you have streaks you have too much foundation on your brush. I like to apply all over my face and rub it in with my hands to get the perfect coverage. Below I just applied foundation to half my face to show you the difference foundation really makes.
Look at how much better it looks! The redness is gone, my face looks brighter and alive :p So ladies, foundation does really help, you have your proof right there.
Next step is concealer, apply underneath your eyes, sides of your nose, corners of your mouth and bridge of your nose. Those areas are more prone to redness. And of course apply to any blemish or anything else you want to hide :p
Fill in your eyebrows with a pencil, I'm using Clinique Instant Life for Brows in soft brown. I love this pencil! It does amazing things for my eyebrows. I know a lot of women are like, "only people who don't have eyebrows do that" Wrong my friends, have you ever noticed spots of your brows that were a little bare? I know I do, and you would be amazed at the difference filling them in makes! Trust me on this one ;) Use light strokes to make them look like actual hairs. The beauty of this pencil is nobody can tell if I drew them in or it was my actual eyebrow hair ;)
Powder is the next step to seal in the foundation and give it that airbrushed feel. I'm using Make up Forever powder this is the closest thing you can get to airbrushed makeup without actually using an airbrush machine. Just tap powder into the cap, use a brush and apply all over your face in a circular motion make sure you get all over the face for even coverage. Your brush size will depend on the type of coverage you want, if you want more coverage use a bigger brush if you want to just seal the makeup use a smaller brush.
The next step is eye primer, take a tiny amount and apply across your eyelids and just under the brow so your colors stay in place and look brighter.
Next is brightener, you want to brighten your face up and give it that dewy glow. If you notice in pictures celebrities always are really bright right under their eyes. I'm using Smashbox's Eye Brightener. All the areas with red circles are where you should apply this. This is so that light with catch these areas and accentuate the key points on your face. Make sure you blend this well so it doesn't look greasy or cakey. If you have full lips I would recommend to stay away from putting brightener on them. They already grab attention so you don't need to make them the only thing people see when they look at you :p
And that my friend, are all the steps to creating the perfect canvas :) You are now ready for your eye makeup.
